Victoria Foundation

How to create a story from data points.

The Victoria Foundation is a community-building non-profit. The organization was publishing an in-depth impact study filled with facts. However, there was no narrative, nothing for donors, media or their stakeholders to understand and share. We condensed a 40-page report into a 12-page, story-rich document.

The result? The organization received a 27% increase in media inquiries and to date, a 9% increase in financial support.

The architects of belonging

There’s more to the story than the numbers.

The Victoria Foundation is a vital part of the capital city of British Columbia. This Civil Society organization, also known as a charitable enterprise, raises funds to support a breadth of nonprofits from hospitals to theatres, after-school care to immigrant centres. All the aspects that make a society supportive and civil are part of this Civil Society organization. To define their impact, they supported an extensive study from the University of Victoria that reflected the need of a myriad of nonprofits and the positive change they make in the lives of residents. The research was extensive, but they knew it didn’t tell the story.

We worked with the Victoria Foundation to draw out the details of the report, the essence of the numbers and the stories that are at the heart of the work they do. And we gave the report a new name: “The Architects of Belonging”. It reflects the essence of charitable organizations.

Working through an almost 40-page, multi-year study, we developed a condensed, story-driven report that not only captures the reach of the organization but also the impact it has on the lives of those living in Victoria and by extension, the community. The result is a vibrant, comprehensive and accessible 12-page document that speaks directly to their audiences. The result was a 27% increase in media inquiries and, to date, 9% growth in support for the vital work of the Victoria Foundation.

That’s the true impact of an impact study.
